Silambarasan said, 'I was initially reluctant to act in this movie. I was in doubt whether a cinematographer can manage to come up with a good entertainer.

However Saravanan narrated the story to me and I was fascinated. His dedication to excel and the thirst to come up with a quality product impressed me'. 'Silambattam' is a movie about a timid youth who is forced to take arms. 'I play a temple priest who leads a simple and pious life. Situations force the young man to go the other way. A major portion of the movie has been shot and is gearing up for an early release.

Divya speaks about Vaaranam Aayiram.

One of the frontline and highest paid actress in Kannada, Ramya whose real name is Divya Spandana is playing the lead actress in Gowtham Vasudeva Menon's ‘Vaaranam Aayiram’. Henceforth she will carry two names and will be known as Divya in Tamil and Ramya in Kannada. Surya has three heroines in the film and Divya plays one among them.

Excerpts from an Interview:

How about the name change from Divya Spandana to Ramya?

I was introduced to films by the Rajkumar family and Parvathamma who has introduced so many girls gave me a break through their banner. Based on astrology and numerology she changed my name to Ramya saying the 'R' would bring me luck. And she was true. That name gave me a place in the Kannada film industry. When I did the Tamil film Kuthu, people there started calling me Kuthu Ramya. People laughed at that name and I hated that. Gowtham Menon while doing Vaaranam Aayiram also didn’t like the prefix and so I again converted to Divya. There are no other Divya in the film industry.

Tell us how Vaaranam Aayiram happened to you.

I had always wanted to work with Mani Ratnam, Gowtham Menon and the likes as these directors have made films with well-etched women characters. They had always given performance oriented roles to their heroines. When Gowtham was looking for a heroine for the film, a journalist friend of mine referred my name. Deepika had walked out of the film and Gowtham was looking for a replacement. The journalist friend came to me and I was excited at the offer. I went to Chennai for the screen test and I bagged the film.

Didn’t you feel insecure sharing screen space with three actresses?

This is my first film where I am sharing space with other actresses. I had only done Rakshita in Kannada but that role was fantastic. I would prefer to do a solo film and have the entire film to my name. Sounding greedy isn’t it! But here things stand different as I have my own screen space. I would agree that I am selfish as an actor and would prefer to be in every frame. I don’t want any other actress to be in the same frame as I am.

Does the role in Vaaranam Aayiram, substancial enough for you?

Definitely. I am happy that I get to essay one such role. To act in a Gowtham film is also a privilege. The film covers my age of a growing girl from 14 to 24. I had to undergo lots of changes in respect of body language, outlook, maturity etc. Nalini who did my costume helped me a lot to get the desired look. I am sporting two pigtails, school uniform and stuff like that. Its tough to play a teenager onscreen as their mind set is very different. Gowtham all the way made me feel like a teenager. He is a not just a brilliant director but a great actor as well and you just require to watch him to do a scene right.

How was it working with Surya?

I have been a huge fan of Surya and after working with him I have become even more. When the shooting for the film begin he was very quiet and we used to exchange just the formal 'Hi' and 'Bye'. Irrespective of that while doing the romantic scenes he gave the kind of take that would make anyone fall in love with him. He is that fantastic as an actor. Gradually we started interacting more. He is very professional, punctual and lots of fun to be with. It’s great to be working with such a perfectionist like him. He never compromises until he gives the best. With a director and actor as such, you just have to give your best. We began shooting for the film in December 2006 and for almost two years, we were together. We had become friends and so it was sad when the shooting ended.

What is this controversy about you participating in the Hogenakkal protest?

Yes, I did participate in the protest, and I would say that farmers in Tamil Nadu are no different from farmers in Karnataka. Farmers everywhere need water.

Panchamirtham coming this December.

'Panchamirtham' directed by Raju Easwaran has completed the entire shoot in record time. Jayaram and Nasser are in the lead roles of the film playing mythological characters Maarichan and Naradhar. Vijay to play double in 'Villu'

Vijay and Prabhu Deva are trying to rekindle the magic of 'Pokkiri' with their new flick 'Villu'. Incidentally 'Pokkiri' was the remake of a Telugu film, 'Villu' seems to have gotten its roots from Hindi film 'Soldier' that starred Bobby Deol and Preity Zinta as the lead.

Vijay will play both the father and son. The son, the protagonist would leave not stone unturned and fight for the honor of his father, who has been falsely accused of treachery. Glamorous Nayantara will play the female lead, whereas yesteryear heroine Ranjitha has been roped in to play the wife of Vijay (Father).

Larger than life heroics and bravery at gigantic proportions will be the basic essence and no other than Vijay would have suited the role best.

Vijay earlier had played a double role in 'Azhagiya Tamizh Magan' which failed to stir up the box office. Let’s see how Vijay fares with 'Villu'.

Trisha will be working on Diwali.

Trisha will be working on Deepavali. There will be no fun for her as it will be a working day on the festive occasion. She would be shooting for the film ‘King’ with Nagarjuna in Bangalore. She is eagerly awaiting the release of 'Abhiyum Naanum', directed by Radha Mohan. She has completed shooting for the film. She says, “I will be in the sets of King on Deepavali day. It's all work for me on Deepavali day.”

At present she is shooting for ‘Sarvam’, directed by Vishnuvardhan. The film has a team of talented technicians led by Vishnuvardhan who are working in the film. Goutham Menon's 'Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikalam' is another film. The film is also nearing completion. She says, “I am doing movies of different genres now. Every film is different from the other. My characterization is quite plausible in all the movies.”

On 'Abhiyum Naanum', she said, "It is a different film altogether. It speaks about the emotional bondage shared between a father and his daughter. I have done several films with Prakashraj and we share a good rapport on screen. Radha Mohan has rendered an engrossing tale, which is far away from commercial cinema. 'Sarvam' is a movie to reckon with. A team of talented technicians led by Vishnuvardhan are working round-the-clock for the movie. 'Chennaiyil Oru Maazhaikalam' is fast nearing completion. A few more portions have to be shot. Working with Goutham is a great learning experience.”
Priyamani’s career has taken a real turn and she has tasted lot of success of late. 'Paruthi Veeran' was the movie in which she left an impression for one and all. She introduced by Bharathiraja in 'Kangalal Kaidhu Sei'. She has acted in several films like Balu Mahendra's 'Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam', 'Malaikottai', 'Thotta'.

After 'Paruthi Veeran' happened, her career took a real U-turn. The film fetched her many awards including the 'Best Actress Award' at the Osian's Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab cinema.

The actress adds, "For four years, I was running behind success. At a point, I even thought of quitting movies and venture into some other profession. However thanks to the Almighty, 'Paruthi Veeran' happened. Director Ameer had faith in my acting credentials and gave me a meaty role in the film. Eventually the movie became a big hit and even won me the National Award for Best Actress."

Priyamani is now one of big guns in South Indian Cinema. She adds, "I want to do varied roles. It doesn't bother me whether it's glamorous or performance-oriented. I feel ecstatic to have achieved success after a great toil".

Producer: Prabu
Director: Kalaprakash
Cast: Ishita, Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, Vedika
Music: Rahman
ARSingers: Benny Dayal, Chinmayi, Krish, Naresh Iyer, Indai Haza, Henry, Madhushree, Rahman AR, Reena Bharadwaj, Blaaze, Javed Ali, Viviane Chaix.
There is no stopping A R Rahman. There is no beating A R Rahman. He is a master musician who has set his own school of music. Every time he makes us smile creating new sounds and experimenting with varied musical outings. With every new offering he outdoes his previous work. For 'Sakkarakatti' he comes with an assorted mix - melody, hip-hop and peppy songs with a youthful feel. Along with Kalaprabhu he has created music for the film that will certainly enchant the listeners.
You just have to listen to the songs once and get glued to them forever. This music album is certainly going to be one among his good works. Taxi, Chinamma will scorch the charts.
Chinmayee sets out with an erotic number ‘I Miss You Da’. Composed brilliantly the track has an enigmatic feel. The harmony and musical interludes are awesome. A kind of number that will stay with you for long.
‘Chinnamma Jhalak UN Nenjil’ sounds reminiscent to Rahman's Chinamma song in 'Meenaxi'. Benny Dayal’s attractive rendition and the pace of the song make it an enjoyable score. The lyrics are in sync with the mood of the track.
Soul soothing music arrives with ‘Elay Ulagam’ in the vocals of Krish and Harish. For this foot-tapping number, violin and the guitars contribute mainly. The singers’ energetic voice adds charm to the track. This is song will soon turn to be an anthem among the youth.
Another brilliant composition follows with ‘Naan Eppodhu’. The uniqueness of the track lies in the amalgamation of different sounds like veena and guitar with rhythm and catchy interludes. A praiseworthy work coming from Rahman.
Get jiggy with ‘Taxi Taxi’. A foot tapping number, this one comes from Benny, Blaze and Vion. The singers deliver a stylish rendition for this energetic number. The kind of music will certainly kick off majorly with the college culture
.
The album wraps up with an awesome melodic number ‘Marudhaani’ coming from maestro Rahman. A sweet and soothing number this one relies more on the vocals of Madhushree and Rahman with less instrumentation. Rahman as a singer is fantastic and as a composer he tries his hands in something novel.
Rahman has delivered a very sweet and melodic album with all the tracks sounding fresh.

Producer: T Shiva
Director: Venkat Prabhu
Cast: Charan S P B, Kajal Agarwal, Prakash Raj, Premji Gangai Amaran and Vega.
Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja
With his racy presentation of 'Saroja', director Venkat Prabhu has proved that his debut 'Chennai 600028' was no flash in the pan.
The technical quality, thanks to scintillating cinematography by Shakthi Saravanan, delightful score by Yuvan Shankar Raja and backed by good performances by all members of the cast provide an apt foil to a good script that makes watching 'Saroja' a pleasure.
The movie is all about the adventures of four friends Jagapathi Babu (S.P. Charan), Ram Babu (Vaibhav), Ganesh (Premji) and Ajay Raj (Shiva), who are stuck in a forest enroute to a one-day-international cricket match in Hyderabad.
They become an unwitting part of a drama over the kidnapping of a woman Saroja (Veda) by a gangster (played excellently by Sampath). Ravichandran, an assistant commissioner of police (Jayaram), and the worried father of Saroja, played by Prakash Raj, help to take the edge-of-the-seat suspenseful rescue of the girl to a pulsating climax.
Prabhu has provided enough entertainment to cat-calling frontbenchers through the item numbers performed by a moll (Nikita). Virtually 75 percent of the movie is shot in the night on high speed film and the result is a treat.
Yuvan Shankar Raja seems to be improving with each film, well on the footsteps of his accomplished father Ilaya Raja.
The sepia night frames of Shakthi Saravanan are indeed brilliant, setting the mood for the gloomy atmosphere and increasing the nail biting wait for the denouement.

Will Vimala Raman join the likes of Asin and Nayantara and make it big after 'Raman Thediya Seethai'? Though she was introduced by K Balachander in 'Poi', she is still to strike it rich in Tamil.
